Project update: The Barton Street drainage upgrade project is nearing completion. The drainage upgrade involved works in the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens and Holland, Lagoon and Barton streets. The works will improve drainage in the area to reduce flooding.

All construction has been completed with only some returfing of the lawn at Botanic Gardens to go.

Council wishes to advise that Seaforth Civil, on behalf of council, are completing works to improve drainage in the area to reduce flooding.

The works will occur within Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens and on Lagoon, Holland and Barton streets. The project is expected to be completed by the end of February 2024, weather permitting.

From late September, stage two commenced in Holland and Barton streets. The works will be undertaken from 6.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday and some weekend work may also be required.

A road closure in a section of Holland Street (near the Lagoon Street intersection) and Barton Street will be in place from Monday, September 25, until late January, weather permitting. Detours will be in place. The closed sections of Holland and Barton streets will only be accessible to residents in that section. Please see map one below.

The speed limit will remain temporarily reduced to 40km/h on Lagoon Street.

While construction is in progress, property access will be affected to some residences within the stage two area of works, as indicated in map two. You will be contacted by the contractor 48 hours prior to disruptions to property access.

The existing Lagoon Street bus stop located near the Holland Street entrance has temporarily moved a short distance to the west. The temporary bus stop is located in Mackenzie Street. Pedestrians can expect detours in the area of works – please follow all signage.

There will be some noise and dust disturbances with various plant and equipment on site. Council sincerely appreciates your patience during these essential works.

Preliminary project works completed in June, 2023

As two large pits are to be excavated within the Botanic Gardens, four non-native species of trees including two large poinciana trees, one large teak tree and a small poinciana tree required removal. The tree removals were necessary so that large equipment could access the site. These trees are non-native species and are not significant to the Mackay region.

Some smaller trees and shrubs also required removal.

The trees will be replaced with local native species once the drainage works are complete.
