This consultation has concluded.
"Thank you to everyone who took the time to consider this matter and provide us with your feedback on the proposal. Council considered the matter at its ordinary meeting on Wednesday 15 December including the feedback that many members of the community expressed either in favour or against the proposal. Council decided that taking into account all of the feedback received the proposal was worthy of support and has advised the Department of Transport of that support. The Department of Transport will now consider the matter and make a decision as to the lease of the rail line. You can download a copy of the minutes of Council's meeting from the library in case you want to view the details of their decision."
The Mackay Regional Council has been approached by the Queensland Government seeking the community's views on a proposal by Mackay Sugar to lease the rail line corridor from Mackay to Marian.
Mackay Regional Council recently considered this matter and decided to undertake community consultation before responding to the State Government. In order to provide the community with an opportunity for input into the proposal a public meeting was held at the Marian Community Hall on Thursday 25 November at which Mackay Sugar delivered a presentation. There was a strong turnout for the meeting with approximately 40 local people attending to express their opinions.
In order to allow those who were unable to attend the meeting to put their views forward the Council is undertaking a period of online community consultation through our Connecting Mackay community engagement website from 26 November to 6 December.
If the proposal goes ahead there is the potential for the Queensland Government to provide some funding to Mackay Regional Council to invest in transport related projects for the benefit of the community. Mackay
Regional Council has developed a draft list of projects which we would also appreciate your feedback on.
Please take the time to view the four parts of Mackay Sugar's presentation located in the library of this forum and have your say by responding to the forum questions.
