The McCreadys Creek Flood and Stormwater Management Study is being undertaken to fill a gap in flood data for a developing area of Mackay. Consultants SMEC were commissioned by Council in September 2021 to undertake the study.

The McCreadys Creek Catchment, shown in Figure 1, is approximately 3,100 ha in size and discharges into the Coral Sea about 7km north of the Mackay Central Business District. The main uses in the upper catchment are grazing and sugar cane with the middle catchment dominated by urban uses including key growth areas zoned ‘Emerging Community’ in the Mackay Region Planning Scheme 2017. Key community and commercial uses in the catchment include Beaconsfield State School, Eimeo State School, Northern Beaches High School, Northern Beaches District Centre, Specialised Centre (Richmond) and the site for the future Northern Beaches Community Hub.

The objectives of the flood and stormwater study are;

  1. understand flood and stormwater behaviour in the McCreadys Creek Catchment;
  2. map flood extents for inclusion in the Mackay Region Planning Scheme Flood and Coastal Hazard Overlay;
  3. develop and assess options to address existing flood and stormwater issues; and
  4. develop and assess trunk infrastructure options to service potential future development recognised in the Mackay Region Planning Scheme.

The project will be undertaken in two phases, phase one will be a baseline flood and stormwater risk assessment and phase two will be a management and mitigation study.

Council has received funding assistance for the study from the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Queensland Resilience and Risk Reduction Fund 2019-20 (QRRRF).

Do you have any information on historical flooding in the McCreadys Creek catchment to assist? This may include photos (like the above image taken during the February 2008 flood), rainfall records etc. Please submit your records or photos via the survey link below or by emailing Strategic Planning strategic.planning@mackay.qld.gov.au or phoning 1300 MACKAY (622 529)

This consultation will close Thursday, February 24, 2022 at 11.59pm.
