The Mackay region has sustained strong population growth in recent times, particularly since 2001. High population growth is expected to continue into the foreseeable future, and Council is anticipating a regional population of at least 200,000 people by 2031.

In order to accommodate  population growth and to better balance and consolidate Mackay’s urban form, Council is currently investigating future development options in the Ooralea area through a Local Area Plan (LAP) process.

This will be an exciting and important project for the City and the region and will involve extensive consultation with affected land owners, State Government agencies and the broader Mackay region community. Your ideas and comments are important....so please join the online discussion forum and contribute to the strategic vision for the Ooralea area!

What are your key areas of support in relation to the Ooralea Preferred Concept Structure Plan?

The key characteristics of the Preferred Concept Structure Plan can be found on page 56 of the Summary Report.

This question has been designed to discuss elements of the structure plan that you support, some of the elements could include:

  • the inclusion of a pedestrian/bike network;
  • the increase of public transport into the area;
  • the development of a town centre and smaller local centres; and
  • the co-locating of the university with other educational, research, commercial and industrial facilities.
