Queens Park Management Plan

Have your say about the future of Queens Park!

Queens Park is one of Mackay's historic jewels, an expansive public park of significance to the city and the wider region. Regrettably, as age and climate have taken their toll on the many significant tree plantings, public perception of the value of the park has diminished. Additionally, the park no longer caters for the range of activities expected of a regionally significant open space.

Our challenge is to protect and enhance the heritage value of Queens Park while expanding its capacity to cater for the requirements and aspirations of an ever growing, and ever changing community. The park's importance as a resource for the community is increasing, and there is a need for an assessment of the park in its present role, and an evaluation of opportunities to ensure it continues to meet the requirements of its current and future patrons.

You're encouraged to have your say about future directions for Queens Park and help guide Mackay Regional Council in assessing opportunities and in developing a management plan for Queens Park.

A new generation of trees and vegetation will need to be considered to take the place of the older ones as they reach the end of their life cycle. The master plan identifies key areas where this is important, and also suggests a method of maintaining variety and interest in the planting, without compromising the comfort and safety of the community. What are your thoughts on the types of trees and vegetation that should be planted in the future? Should they be natives or exotics or a combination of both?

It is possible to limit vehicle access over time? This approach would contribute to a safer and more relaxed atmosphere. Is this a good idea, should vehicle access be limited and if so, will all areas of the park be easily accessible?

Is it important to respect and enhance the heritage aspects of Queens Park by constructing all new structures in a similar style to existing structures or is it more important to ensure new structures are not merely replicas of heritage structures but are, in design and detail, of the present?

This may be a small, well maintained park in a country town, a larger park in a main centre, or even an overseas location? Please list the name of the park, where it is located, and the main features that you liked about this park.
