Dog off-leash areas to be trialled

The region’s first designated dog off-leash areas open on Thursday March 1.

Mackay Regional Council will trial four designated areas for six months to gauge the use, compliance and community reaction to having such areas available.

The areas are:
Camilleri St Park, Eimeo (West section) 24 hours a day

Three beach areas operate 7 days a week between 5am-8am and 5pm-8pm
Bucasia Beach (Williams Avenue to Symons Avenue)
Town Beach (Evans Street to Bridge Road)
Campwin Beach

We want know your opinion on the suitability of these Off-Leash areas and whether there are any other relevant issues that need to be considered.

As our region's population continues to grow, Mackay Regional Council and the Regional Social Development Centre are conducting research to better understand the requirements of new arrivals to our region.

As part of the research, we are keen to better understand how business and industry support staff (new arrivals) who are new to our region, as well as, other factors such as retention rates and cost impacts when staff who are new arrivals find it difficult to settle in the region.

Have your say on Mackay City Centre public realm improvements

"The draft concept plan suggests a number of 'ready-to-go' catalyst projects as the initial building blocks to achieving the City Centre vision," he said.

"The catalyst projects cover the City Core, interactive signage, active facades and urban street typologies; Old Town Hall and a Civic Precinct revamp to offer a new urban parkland for the community.

"These projects combine to ensure that Mackay moves towards an active, liveable, accessible, culturally vibrant and attractive City Centre. "

A key role for this project is to attract funding for public realm improvements.

"In order for the concept plan to come to fruition, we need funding and the public's involvement."

"Improving the public places and streetscapes within our Mackay City Centre offers our community the benefits of a modern CBD, while ensuring the physical environment keeps pace with business activity and community needs and aspirations.

"The draft concept plan is about giving back to the community a public realm that fits a thriving centre."

Members of the public are encouraged to have their say on the draft concept plan by visiting Connecting Mackay.

"An opportunity is available to have your say on the draft Concept Plan including how you see the priorities for the catalyst projects," he said.

"Mackay Regional Council urges you to have your say before Friday, February 17."

Thank you to all of those who recently took the time to complete the survey and provide comment about the Mackay Region Community Plan - Tomorrow's Mackay.

As a result of consultation, the draft plan has been updated and in the final step of the drafting process we seek the community's confirmation of the plan and ask – Have we missed anything?, Does the plan portray the type of community you would like to live in?

We invite you to tell us if we got it right by clicking on any of the key community plan themes on the right and letting us know.

Connecting Mackay will soon be filled with ideas and projects by Mackay Regional Council on which it wants your comments.

You can be ready to comment and contribute your ideas by signing up to create yourself a user name.

Simply click on the SIGN UP tab at the top right hand of the page, when prompted provide a name (it can be your first name), a USERNAME and PASSWORD of your choice, a valid email address and the location in which you live. Your comments will appear under your chosen Username.

Make sure your colleagues, friends and family sign up so they can also have their say and leave their ideas.
