Hibiscus Coast Region community resilience planning

Hibiscus Coast residents will have the opportunity to lead how their community responds in a disaster, with the development of a Local Resilience Plan.

In a first for our community, workshops will be held in Seaforth, Haliday Bay and Cape Hillsborough to increase awareness and common understanding of natural hazards and create a more resilient community.

These four workshops will be interactive and will aim to support individuals and communities to understand their risks and roles in order to improve outcomes during and after disasters. These workshops will be facilitated by leading resilience and adaption consultants, Meridian Urban.

The workshop facilitators will take residents through several activities that will enable them to share and discuss details about previous natural hazards and issues during these times. This will assist in planning and preparing for future events.

Residents can attend one of four works:

  • Wednesday, September 6, 9am – 12noon, Seaforth Community Hall.
  • Wednesday, September 6, 4pm – 7pm, Seaforth Community Hall.
  • Thursday, September 7, 4pm – 7pm, Ball Bay Haliday Bay Rural Fire Shed.
  • Friday, September 8, 9am – 12noon, Cape Hillsborough Tourist Park.

The purpose of the Local Resilience Plan pilot project is to:

  • Support people, communities, organisations and businesses to understand their risks and roles, and encourage resilience actions to improve community outcomes after disasters.
  • Identify actions and improvements across all roles and responsibilities to reduce risks, limit risks increase and enhance resilience for the future.

The Hibiscus Coast Local Resilience Plan will be the pilot plan for other regions going forward.

This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments’ Queensland Resilience and Risk Reduction Fund and Mackay Regional Council.
