Vassallo Constructions, on behalf of council will be completing The Pioneer River flood levee project.

The works will include installing a new earthen levee in some locations, installing a block levee wall in other locations and installing additional stormwater drainage outlets. A floodgate will be installed at the end of Joseph Court (between 9 and 11 Joseph Court) to provide access for maintenance vehicles, as well as pedestrians. The gate will be closed as required during significant flooding events. Please see the map detailing wall types, locations and heights.

It will be necessary that a number of trees are removed from the existing levee area to allow for the installation of the new levee wall. However, the removal of these trees will be offset with tree and vegetation replanting along the reserve on the riverbank and within the park area behind Valetta Gardens and Rivers Edge estates. The location of this planting will assist in providing erosion protection and supporting local biodiversity.

The earthen levee and block levee wall will vary in height, depending on its location. The exact location of the block levee wall will vary, but it is expected to be located at least approximately 700mm off existing property boundary lines.

Works are expected to start in early April and be completed by April 2024, weather permitting.

The contractor will be completing the project in stages. Please see the project stages map for these locations and anticipated start times.

Construction traffic will be entering and exiting off Heaths Road with some construction traffic travelling within the estates.

Works will be undertaken between 6.30am and 5.00pm, Monday to Saturday.

Should you have any questions about the project please contact the project manager, Brendan Vassallo from Vassallo Constructions on 4968 0068 or contact Martin Joseph on 1300 MACKAY (622 529).

This project is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Preparing Australian Communities Fund and Mackay Regional Council.
