Consultation has concluded

The Koumala Water Supply Scheme is about to receive a big upgrade!

Council is planning to construct a new water treatment plant in Koumala to reduce the hardness of the potable water in the township.

The Koumala treated water quality data shows that while it is of acceptable quality from a health perspective, the water is higher in turbidity, hardness and salinity than is ideal. The new plant will include a similar system to the Eton Water Treatment Plant which will reduce water hardness for Koumala residents and ensure that the water quality continues to meet the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines aesthetic values.

Council’s Water Services team were successful in their application through the 2019-2021 Local Government Grants and Subsidies for funding of $801,800 for the Koumala Water Softening Treatment Plant which will be completed in 2020/2021 financial year. Council is currently finalising the tender specifications and detailed drawings for this project. The project will then be advertised for public tender in the third quarter of 2020. The Koumala Water Softening Treatment Plant will be located at the western corner of Water Tower Road, adjacent to the Gordon Morrison Sports Ground.

Construction is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2020. Pre-works have commenced, and Ergon Energy is currently extending the overhead power supply from the Bruce Highway to the new water treatment plant. Once the tender is awarded, council will provide more information regarding the hours and days of construction.

The new treatment plant is expected to be fully operational by June 2021, weather permitting.
