The McCreadys Creek Flood and Stormwater Management Study was undertaken to fill a gap in flood data for a developing area of Mackay. Consultants SMEC were commissioned by council to undertake the study, and the baseline study was adopted by council in August 2024.

The McCreadys Creek Catchment, shown in Figure 1, is approximately 34km2 in size and discharges into the Coral Sea about 7.5km north of the Mackay City CentreThe main waterways draining the catchment are McCreadys Creek and its tributaries are Little McCreadys Creek coming from the west and McCreadys Creek South

The main uses in the upper catchment are grazing and sugar cane with the middle catchment dominated by urban uses including key growth areas zoned ‘Emerging Community’ in the Mackay Region Planning Scheme 2017. Key community and commercial uses in the catchment include Beaconsfield State School, Eimeo State School, Northern Beaches High School, Northern Beaches District Centre, Specialised Centre (Richmond) and the future Northern Beaches Community Hub.

The project has been undertaken in two phases. Phase One was a baseline assessment and Phase Two is a management and mitigation studyThe Baseline study commenced in 2021 with the commencement of survey and commissioning of aerial LIDAR to provide an accurate representation of ground surface elevationsThe community was consulted in 2021/2022 via a letterbox drop and Connecting Mackay/Facebook campaign.

The baseline report adopted by Council in August 2024 utilised best practice flood study guidelines and defines the flood hazard over the catchmentThe flood study data will be used in catchment planning and to inform council’s flood hazard and emergency management systemsIt will also be provided to the Insurance Council of AustraliaThe Study’s flood hazard information will also be incorporated into the Mackay Region Planning Scheme via a minor amendment package which will be subject to a separate process.

Council received funding assistance for the study from the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Queensland Resilience and Risk Reduction Fund 2019-20 (QRRRF).
