Koumala residents will enjoy improved water quality now that work is finished on council's new water treatment plant.

Contractor Clean Teq Water began construction of the Koumala Water Treatment Plant in late-April 2021, with the plant fully commissioned in December 2022.

The new $2 million plant includes a water softening unit to reduce the hardness of the town's water supply as well as water storage tanks and a pump station onsite.

Mayor Greg Williamson said while data showed that Koumala’s treated water was of acceptable quality from a health perspective, the water was higher in hardness than is ideal.

“Hardness can make the water less amenable to drink, and our aim is to always provide the best possible outcome for our residents,” Mayor Williamson said.

“The plant has been specifically built to reduce the hardness of the town’s water supply, so this is a terrific result,” he said.

The Koumala Water Treatment Plant is located at the western corner of Water Tower Road, adjacent to the Gordon Morrison Sports Ground.

The Koumala Water Quality Upgrade is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies program in association with Mackay Regional Council.

This is a $2 million project, with the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program contributing $801,767.94 towards the project.

Should you have any queries about this project, please contact council’s Project Manager Graeme Cox on 1300 MACKAY (622 529).

Disconnecting the old water tower (November 28)

After successful testing of the new Koumala Water Treatment Plant, contractor Clean Teq Water will be disconnecting the old Koumala Water Tower on Monday, November 28.

The works will include removing three underground valves and installing a new section of watermain pipe.

As a result of these works, traffic control will be in place on Water Tower Road and there will be intermittent water interruptions throughout the day. Please ensure you have adequate water supply during these works.

The contractor will be onsite from 7am to 5pm and the works are expected to be completed within the day.

After the completion of these works, Koumala residents will be accessing their water supply through the new Koumala Water Treatment Plant.

The new $2 million plant is a joint initiative of Mackay Regional Council and the Queensland Government to reduce the hardness of the town’s water supply.

Council would like to thank residents for their patience and cooperation during this project.

Should you have any questions, please contact council’s project manager Graeme Cox on 1300 MACKAY (622 529).

Testing the new Koumala Water Treatment Plant

For the next four weeks, council will be testing the performance of the new Koumala Water Treatment Plant.

During this time the team will be switching back and forth between the existing infrastructure and the new plant.

Council expects the transition to be smooth, with minimal impact to residents, however there may be periods of increased water pressure.

Once the testing/commissioning period is completed, the plant will be handed over to council, and residents will be informed when the plant is operational.

Should you have any questions about these works, please contact council's project manager Graeme Cox on 1300 MACKAY (622 529).
